Pastor Greeting

Welcome to the website of Gordon United Methodist Church. We have provided this site to give an overview of the mission and ministry of this local congregation of United Methodist Christians. It is exciting to be part of this church! With strong lay leadership and faithful, committed and talented members, we are striving to share the good news of Jesus Christ within our community and the larger community of the whole world. While we already have effective ministries for all age groups, we are continuing to consider all possible ways to evangelize the un-churched, nurture our membership, and be loving, compassionate members of the community who truly care about and respond to the needs of God’s people.
Gordon UMC is a beautiful, historic church, dating back to 1849. Our current sanctuary was completed in 1908 and we are looking forward to an exciting centennial celebration in 2008. Even though our sanctuary is almost 100 years old, it was renovated in the mid 1970’s and is well preserved with beautiful stained glass windows and the latest in audio and video technology that was recently installed. In addition to our sanctuary, we have a separate Education Building and a separate Fellowship Hall that are well appointed for meals, meetings, fellowship and fun.
There are many things about Gordon UMC that will appeal to someone looking for a church family. In addition to the new audiovisual technology, we also have a wonderful music program directed by Mrs. Jeanne Gibbs. Jeanne directs the Chancel Choir, our children’s choir, the widely heralded Unity Handbell Choir and a children’s handbell choir. Also, at the time of this writing, we are beginning a contemporary Praise and Worship team. These are exciting times at Gordon United Methodist Church!
We believe that Christian growth is important. A very necessary element in our Christian growth is Christian education. There are Christian educational opportunities for all ages. Included in this are our dynamic Sunday School program, a mid-day Bible study that meets each week on Wednesday for lunch and study, appropriately referred to as “Lunch with Jesus,” and a Monday night Bible study for those who can’t come to the mid-day study.
Being good citizens, we offer our facilities to various groups for meeting places. Currently, the Wilkinson County Foster Parent Association holds their monthly meetings here. We also sponsor and support Cub Scout Pack 363. Our members are also involved with other community affairs such as the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, American Red Cross Blood Drives, the Depot historical program, Family Connections, recreational athletics, Gordon Better Home Town and their activities such as the Fall Line Festival, and many other significant events within our community.
We invite you to peruse our website and see how greatly God is blessing us. If you are looking for a place to worship or a church home, consider visiting with us. Once you get to know us, we believe that you will like us. If we can provide pastoral care or assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us. We are honored to be in our Lord’s service and cherish every opportunity to share His love.
